Artist Talk with Julian Menand/ EINlab: Try and See: Intro and 3d photography

On Thursday Julian Menand talked about his work.

Later Ania led first Einlab: See! She started with an introduction about visual perception and how does such an approach correspond to photography. This approach will be the core for all the labs. Participants saw some examples of illusions of perception but also made experiments with vision.

The second part of the lab was dedicated to 3d photography. First, participants learned some theory behind the binocular vision, and then they experimented to create their own anaglyphs.

In the EIN: TRY lab participants drew associations that are connected with their project. That way they found new aspects to their project. Also we had the second session of crits.

EIN Lab: Try Introduction

So, the days unfold and the ideas begin to snowball... 

Aleks opens the morning with a creatively stimulating game named "Brute Think!"

Participants were asked to randomly draw 2 words from an envelope. The task was to create a relevance between these two words in a sentence structure.

The afternoon was followed with a CRIT Session. 

Participants are each given 20 minutes to present a piece of their work and receive open criticism from the rest of the group. 

A session consists of: 

-a description of the artists process and intentions for this particular work

-a discussion of the skills and practices utilized 

-open questions

-free associative comments & observations

The purpose of the CRIT Sessions is best understood in 3 points:

/Describe

/Interpret

/Judge

Receiving a variety of descriptions from individual participants provides as a means to expand the free association process. Allowing a flow of interpretations around the room opened doors for discussions and new points of view. 

Running along the lines of the theme "It's not good enough," we refrained from reaching the Judge step, because...well.....it just wouldn't be good enough.

The Welcoming Dinner & A First Working Day

After a long day of flight-switching and checking in, the photographers were finally able to sit down on Monday night for an introduction dinner in the Liebig space, hosted by Aleks, Ania & Julien.

Tuesday provided as a fresh start. We got to know each other by drawing portraits. 

Later participants met with photographer Jan Von Holleben to discuss their project proposals on a one-to-one basis.

3 WEEK RESIDENCY WORKSHOPS: CREATIVITY AND PHOTOGRAPHY Berlin, 20 February - 11 March 2012

The “EIN lab: Interact!” project is a multilateral project that will bring together 16 young and creative people from Poland, Germany, Slovenia and Latvia to create individual photographic series during a three-week residency workshops program in Berlin. Through photography and creativity workshops they will develop their portfolios and gain tangible professional skills in a fun and exciting setting. The results will be presented with an exhibition and a .pdf online magazine.


- 30 hours of creativity and photography workshops
- 24/7 access to a large work space
- creation of personal photography project mentored by Jan Von Holleben, www.janvonholleben.com
- professional portfolio improvement and personal network expansion
- opportunity to contribute to EIN - a digital photography magazine
- gallery, museum and studio visits in Berlin
- international promotion (exhibitions, presentations, festivals, and EIN website)
- opportunity to work in a group of 16 young photographers from Germany, Poland, Slovenia and Latvia
- final group exhibition in Berlin

Costs:
- Participants pay: 250 EUR + insurance and local transport
- Participants get: accommodation, food, and 70% of travel costs to Berlin + 100 EUR for production
of their artistic project
